March 2016 Awards Recipients

Wed., March 9th, Soroptimist held its second Awards luncheon for the year.

This year's Ruby Awardf For Women Helping Women will be presented to the highly-respected Dr. Kate Transchel who founded the Stop Trafficking Foundation at CSU, Chico and continues her efforts to educate the public on this international tragedy and to provide assistance to victims both here and in Eastern Europe.

The Violet Richardson Community Service Awards went to Haley Hamman, a senior at Inspire High School with a GPA of 3.88, and Olivia Leiker from Chico High School who was also recently honored as a Subway Scholar of the Month. Haley volunteers tutoring and assistance to autistic students and aspires to a career in Special Education.

Haley has chosen the Little Red Hen to share her award. In addition to her devotion to playing soccer and achieving excellence in her studies, Olivia has been a Girl Scout for 12 years and has served as a camp counselor for both the Girl Scouts and Tech Trek. Olivia is an avid supporter of women and girls in STEM fields and seeks a career in the medical field. Olivia shares her award with the Girl Scouts of Northern California.

The recipients of the Live Your Dream Awards are Sophia Salas and Nina Garcia. After overcoming debilitating obstacles, both are attending Butte College on a new pathway to improve their lives as well as the lives of their sons.

Live Your Dream Award - $1000
This award is for women who are working to better their lives through additional schooling and skills training, have the primary financial responsibility for themselves and/or dependents, are attending or have been accepted to an undergraduate degree or vocational skills training program and who demonstrate financial need.

This award comes with a $1,000.00 cash grant from SI Chico for each award recipient. Recipients are eligible for further awards at Regional and Federation levels.

Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women - $1000
This award recognizes and honors the first federation president, Ruby Lee Minar. A ruby is a gemstone associated with wisdom, vitality, strength, vivacity, power and love, all words embodying the strong and compassionate women who are our award recipients. The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who have worked to improve the lives of women and girls through their professional and/or volunteer work. Our recipient is eligible for further awards at Regional and Federation levels.

This award comes with a cash grant of $1,000.00 to the non-profit of the recipient’s choice. This year SI Chico’s recipient has selected La Leche League.

Violet Richardson Award - $1000
Named for the president of the first Soroptimist club, the Violet Richardson Award honors girls who are making a difference through volunteer service. Each year, Soroptimist clubs honor girls who donate their time and energy to causes that make the community and world a better place— such as working to end discrimination and poverty, assisting women and children who are victims of domestic violence, mentoring young girls, etc.
